School Board Candidate Forums

Recording of Sept 13th, 2023 School Board Forum will be available by Sept 22nd

School Board Candidate Forums take place in September at Bloomington Civic Plaza in Council Chambers. A LWV-trained moderator conducts the Forum in front of a live audience.

Questions for candidates are submitted by the live audience. Questions can also be submitted in advance from Bloomington residents. Email questions to lwvbloomington@lwvmn.org. Candidates have 1.5 minutes to make an opening statement, 1 minute to answer each question and 0.5 minute for a closing statement. Forums are recorded and broadcast on Bloomington TV and posted on the City of Bloomington’s website.

The school board consists of 7 members elected at-large. They serve 4 year overlapping terms. The 4 (or 3 depending on the year) candidates receiving the most votes are elected. Elections are held in odd-numbered years.

The School Board is the policy-making body for Bloomington Public Schools. While the board is responsible for school programs and operations by law, it delegates some portion of that authority to the Superintendent. The School Board is governed by a chair and vice chair who are elected by the School Board membership.
