CANDIDATE FORUMS

The Bloomington LWV holds candidate forums where candidates answer questions posed by Bloomington voters. Local elections are held in odd numbered years; statewide and federal elections are held in even numbered years*.

*Senators are elected for a four-year term and representatives are elected for a two-year term. However, in election years ending in 0, such as 2010 or 2020, Senators serve for a two-year term in order to provide for the redistricting process done in conjunction with the United States census.

The League of Women Voters Minnesota and our local Leagues conduct candidate forums to provide the public with an opportunity to hear candidates discuss the issues that are important to members of the public. The League is a nonpartisan organization that does not support or oppose any political party or candidate. The views expressed in each forum are those of the candidates, not those of the League of Women Voters. LWV Minnesota and our local Leagues post complete, unedited recordings of forums. Editing is authorized only for official media reporting. Excerpts or edited clips of candidate forums may not be used for partisan or political purposes.

- Candidates do not receive forum questions in advance of the forum -

Voters attending the forum have two opportunities to submit questions to the candidates. Written questions will be accepted throughout the forum. Voters may also submit questions via email to local league email address. By League of Women Voter policy, the identity of the person asking the question is confidential. Any questions submitted via email will remain confidential with all identifying information removed before the event. The email option for submitting questions creates an opportunity for voters to ask questions in a more private manner because it guarantees anonymity. All questions are screened by a neutral committee to ensure that questions are applicable to all candidates. All questions received remain the property of the League of Women Voters.
